Joseph Abboud Rugs
Joseph Abboud, menswear fashion designer, was born in May of 1950. Abboud expanded his designs from just menswear to home decor when his line of home area rugs was officially launched in Fall of 2011. Pairing his designs with an established rug manufacturer, like Nourison, gave him all the help he needed to help his line branch out into a different aspect of fashion.
Abboud has already established a more than memorable career. He is a famous designer, author, and devoted father to two girls, Lila and Ari. On a trip to Australia, Abboud discovered that his great-grandfather owned the largest men’s tailored-clothing company in Australia. Between his great-grandfather and seamstress mother, you could say that fashion runs in the family.
Abboud got his start when he began working part time at 16 at Louis Boston. He joined Ralph Lauren in 1981 but left a few short years later when he started his own label in 1986 named JA Apparel. He later sold the line in 2000 for a cool $65 million. He left JA apparel in 2005 but launched a new line called Jaz in 2007 followed by Black Brown 1826 for Lord &Taylor in 2008. He also has many famous clients such as news anchor, Tom Browkaw, and Boston Red Sox short stop, Nomar Garciaparra.
Joseph has also been the recipient of many fashion awards. In 1989 and 1990 he was honored with being nominated by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) for an award. He was lucky enough to win the award both years making him the first menswear fashion designer to win it two years in a row.
Abboud has also dabbled in writing, authoring the book Threads: My Life Behind the Seams in the High-stakes World of Fashion. In the book, he describes the fashion industry, talking about everything from designing and selling to naming colors. He also talks about the racial profiling he experienced after the attacks on September 11, 2002 and the court battle over legal rights to his name.

Joseph Abboud is also a very involved breast cancer activist. He even had the honor of being named one of five GQ magazine and General Motors’ “Men for the Cure”. His passion for breast cancer developed at home, losing both his mother and sister to the disease. He has done a good chunk of his charity work for Concept:Cure. Abboud has been quoted saying “Concept:Cure is a very special program for me. My mother and sister died from breast cancer. It’s a disease we really have to find a cure for. I know I speak for my colleagues when I say (Concept:Cure) is not about monetary or PR opportunity for us, it’s about doing something really good.”
Aside from his awards in fashion, and notability from Concept:Cure and being an author, Abboud has also made special appearances in the media. He was the first fashion designer to throw out the opening pitch at Boston’s Fenway Park for a Red Sox game in 2002. He has been referenced in TV shows such as Seinfeld and The Wire. He was also referenced in the books American Psycho, Tell No One, and Just One Look. Abboud was even given the honor of making an appearance in Robert B. Parker’s novel, The Professional.
Now that Abboud has dipped his toes in a little bit of everything , he turned his attention to home furnishings with a line of specially designed rugs from Nourison, one the of the nation’s leading rug manufacturers. He has three beautiful collections: Joseph Abboud Chicago, Joseph Abboud Modelo, and Joseph Abboud Monterey.
